So why share that? Because at the end of the day I know I had done everything I could to prepare for emergencies such as this. Not that this was that critical, but it was scary for both of us. The last time I was unconscious it was in the ring as a result of taking a roundhouse kick to the head (in a previous life I was a trained martial artist).
But my estate plan is in complete order. And I have electronic versions of the signed and executed documents on a thumb drive on my key ring. That same thumb drive holds all of my health insurance information along with the list of medications that I take on a routine basis. It also includes my primary care physician's name, phone number, and email address. Lastly, all of that information is printed on a laminated card that I carry in my wallet.
So is that a bit of an over-prepared type A personality? Of course! But I would rather error on the side of being ready just in case than leave it to my loved ones to figure out in the heat of the moment.
And that is the real message here. Having a completed estate plan in place removes all of the anxiety, worry, and work that your loved ones would have to do on your behalf at a time when they are least prepared to do that. So if you are not going to do it for yourself, do it for your family. Get your estate plan in order.
We would be happy to help. As always, if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.
Oh, and the coda to the story is that we think my wife tore her ACL as she rushed to assist me when I fainted. Goes to show you that no good deed ever remains unpunished.
